Akcja anime rozgrywa się w erze Meiji, w której to ludzie wciąż pamiętają krwawe żniwo, jakie zebrała Bakumatsu – wojna domowa sprzed kilku lat. W czasie tej wojny zmianie uległ ustrój Japonii (z cesarstwa stała się republiką). W jej trakcie przeciwko szogunatowi walczył legendarny Hitokiri Battousai – rojalista, którego bali się nawet najlepsi Shinsengumi. Battousai zapisał się w historii Japonii jako ktoś, kto przy użyciu swej katany wprowadził kraj w nowe czasy. Jednak po zakończeniu konfliktu legendarny zabójca zniknął, rozpoczynając samotną wędrówkę, by choć w niewielkim stopniu odpokutować swoje winy.
